Today, anyone can open an AI tool, paste in a job description and ask it to rewrite their CV in seconds.
A few years ago, a well-written CV could help you stand out.
Today, anyone can open an AI tool, paste in a job description and ask it to rewrite their CV in seconds.
The grammar is polished. The keywords are there. Every achievement somehow becomes more strategic, more impactful and more impressive.
And this is no longer unusual.
According to a Statista+ survey conducted in January 2026, 70% of adults surveyed in the US and 64% in the UK said they had used AI when applying for a job in the previous 24 months. Among US respondents who had used AI, automatically writing or designing a CV was the most commonly reported use, at 49%.
There is just one problem.
Everyone else has access to the same tools.
AI Isn’t the Problem. Sameness Is.
There is nothing wrong with using AI to improve your CV.
It can help with grammar, structure and clarity. But when candidates use the same tools to make themselves sound more professional, everyone can start sounding remarkably similar.
Results-driven professional.
Proven track record.
Dynamic and strategic leader.
Successfully spearheaded cross-functional initiatives.
The words sound good. But what do they actually tell a recruiter about you?
AI can improve how your experience is described. It cannot change the experience itself.
Instead of focusing on impressive language, focus on specifics.
What were you responsible for? What did you personally contribute? What problems did you solve? What changed because of your work?
Real experience has details. And those details are yours.
Use AI as an Editor, Not as Your Biographer
Use AI to check your grammar. Make a complicated sentence clearer. Organise your experience. Tailor your CV so the most relevant information is easier to find.
But be careful when AI starts telling your career story for you.
The more you ask it to make you sound “more senior”, “more strategic” or “more impressive”, the further the finished CV may move away from your actual experience.
The same Statista+ research found that more than half of respondents in both the US and UK believed AI use in the application process could result in applications presenting a false picture of candidates’ actual skills.
And eventually, someone is going to ask you about what you wrote.
The Interview Is Where the CV Gets Tested
A recruiter sees something impressive on your CV.
The next question might simply be:
“Tell me more about that.”
What did you actually do? What was your role? What did you personally contribute? What was the result?
A CV can get you into the conversation. Once that conversation begins, it still has to be your experience.
If you cannot comfortably explain something written on your CV, it probably should not be there.
Recruiters need to adapt too.
A highly polished CV does not automatically mean a stronger candidate, just as an imperfectly written CV does not automatically mean a weaker one.
The focus needs to move beyond presentation to evidence, context and what the candidate actually did.
Your CV Still Needs to Sound Like You
AI is not going away, and telling candidates simply not to use it isn’t particularly useful.
A CV was never supposed to be a writing competition. Its purpose is to help someone understand what you have done, what you can do and why they should speak with you.
AI can help you tell that story.
It should not become the story.
So before you submit your next CV, read it one more time and ask yourself:
Does this actually sound like me?
Because when everyone has access to polished language, your real experience may be what makes you stand out.
